PETOSKEY — Wreaths Across America brought some holiday cheer to Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey on Saturday, with volunteers and local veterans placing a wreath at the grave of every veteran in the cemetery.
Despite single digit temperatures, there were plenty of people walking through the snow and ice with wreaths in their arms to search for each grave. In addition to placing the wreath, volunteers were encouraged to brush snow off the headstone and read the veteran’s name out loud.
“We started wreaths across America in 2013, and we did 740 wreaths that year. Some of you I’m sure remember it. It was -24 and there was 2.5 feet of snow, even colder than today,” said Bart Crawford, assistant superintendent for Greenwood. “Since then we’ve done every veteran in the cemetery. That’s about 1,700, so it’s quite a few.”
The wreaths will stay up through the winter. In the Jewish section of the cemetery, American flags were placed instead of wreaths.
